4 Reasons Your AC Is Short Cycling in Daniel Island, SC

Short cycling is a common problem with air conditioners. While the issue can be frustrating, it’s important to understand what’s causing it. In this post, we’ll cover the reasons your AC is short cycling so that you can better understand and address the issue.

1. Freezing of the Evaporator Coils

This can happen when the air conditioner operates in cool mode and the fan stops working. The coils won’t be able to absorb heat from the air anymore, so the unit will turn off to prevent further cooling. Once the coils have thawed, the unit will turn back on and repeat the cycle.

2. Dirty or Clogged Filter

When the air filter is full of dirt and debris, it restricts airflow to the AC unit. This causes the AC unit to work harder than usual to circulate air throughout your home.

As a result, the AC unit will start to overheat and eventually turn off to prevent damage. In addition, a dirty or clogged air filter can cause your AC unit to freeze up.

3. Air Conditioner Is Too Large for the Room

A large air conditioner can be too powerful for a smaller space. In such cases, it’ll overwork by quickly cooling the room.

This might trigger it to turn off frequently before reaching the required room temperatures. These fluctuations are usually to prevent the overcooling of the room.

4. Leaks in the Refrigerant

When the refrigerant leaks, the closed loop or stream that cools and releases the hot air outside will have inadequate pressure to perform the task effectively. The AC unit will have to overwork to cool the air with lower refrigerant than normal. Air will collect inside the unit as the refrigerant reduces, thus, causing it to short cycle.
