3 Sources of Indoor Air Pollution in Ladson, SC
You may not know it, but your Ladson, SC home might have multiple sources of indoor air pollution in it. Some are relatively obvious pollution contributors while others may surprise you. Here are three common sources of indoor air pollution you may not know about.
1. Natural Gas Stoves, Furnaces and Water Heaters
Natural gas appliances are reliable and boast low operating costs. However, those benefits come with a tradeoff: air pollution in your home. Burning natural gas creates multiple byproducts that end up in your home’s air.
The most common natural gas combustion byproduct is nitrogen dioxide (NO2). However, burning natural gas can also release carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. Your gas stove is likely the biggest culprit, so be sure to use the vent and introduce some fresh air in your home during its use.
2. Household Cleaning Products
Another source of indoor air pollution you might not know about is everyday household cleaning products. Many release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which vaporize at room temperature. VOCs in cleaning products include benzene, methylene chloride, toluene and ethylene glycol.
To reduce your exposure, you can limit your product purchases to those on the EPA’s Safer Choice product list. They include fewer chemicals and don’t pose as much risk to your home’s air quality.
3. Adhesives
Finally, adhesives are a significant source of air pollution in the average home. While you might not realize it, adhesives are everywhere. They’re in your furniture, electronic devices and even your home’s building materials.
Since there’s no way to eliminate all adhesives from your home, you should work to minimize their pollution. That starts with opening your windows to air out your home whenever possible. You may also be able to upgrade your air conditioner’s air filter to one with activated charcoal, which captures VOCs. Check the manufacturer’s manual for guidance on filters.
