Why My Heat Pump Is Blowing Hot Air in AC Mode

In spring and summer in Summerville, SC, you need to be able to trust your heat pump to blow out cool air. It can be exceedingly frustrating when it doesn’t do so. Here are some reasons why your heat pump might start blowing out hot air while in cooling mode.

Low Refrigerant Level

As the refrigerant flows through your system, it should absorb heat from the air as it evaporates and then release that heat through the compressor outside after it condenses. Depending on the direction in which refrigerant flows, it should warm or cool your home while pushing all the warm air outside. If refrigerant levels run low, however, your heat pump won’t be able to work efficiently.

If your heat pump is in cooling mode but low on refrigerant, it will not be able to product the cool that is needed. The only solution is to call for service so a technician can stop the leak and refill your system with refrigerant. Refrigerant is toxic and dangerous to the environment, so you’ll need professionals to do this work for you as part of repair or maintenance services.

Broken Reversing Valve

We mentioned briefly that whether your heat pump warms or cools your home depends on the direction in which refrigerant moves through the system. The component responsible for regulating the direction of the refrigerant is the reversing valve. A common explanation for why your HVAC system is blowing unwanted hot air is that its reversing valve won’t budge from its heating mode position.

Clogged Filters

Dirty, old and clogged filters can significantly hamper your heat pump’s ability to circulate cool air. If the filter is blocking any intake of air for the system it could overheat or just shut down and stop working. Fortunately, you can avoid this if you remember to replace the filters at least once every three months.
