The thermostat is probably the part of your central heating and air conditioning system that you are most familiar with. Most older thermostats had mercury bulbs that had to be perfectly level, had plastic arms you had to move to preferred settings, and looked exactly like what they were, a control. Today, thermostats are
mostly LCD with backlit displays, have buttons for setting your desired temperatures and are aesthetically pleasing. Thermostats are available in either manual changeover (you have to actually tell it to heat or cool) or automatic changeover (you set a heating and cooling temperature and the thermostat automatically brings on your system as required). A programmable, or
setback thermostat can be set to match your daily routine. Substantial energy savings can be obtained by setting the
thermostat back when the home or office is not occupied (during the night when you're asleep or the office is closed, or during the day when you're at
work or weekends if the office is closed). There is also a new Carrier control, a
"Thermidistat", that is a programmable thermostat that also controls the indoor humidity. Some
thermostats even have timers that remind you to change your filter periodically and outdoor sensors that allow you to get the current outdoor temperature just by pushing a button on your
thermostat. You can select a thermostat that fits your particular lifestyle -from a simple manual changeover to a Carrier "Thermidistat" that lets you program in different temperatures for up to four periods per day and control the humidity too!

Ductwork is the "forgotten" component of your home comfort system, while in reality, it is just as important as your equipment. Ductwork is often overlooked because it's hidden in a crawl space, attic or knee wall. It is estimated that the average system loses 30%-35% of the heated or cooled air it produces through faulty ductwork before the air ever gets to the conditioned space. That means you are spending 300/0-35% more on energy than you have to. Leaking supply ductwork means you are losing air you paid to heat or cool and got no benefit from. Leaking return ductwork means your
system is pulling in unconditioned air, making your system work that much harder. If you are pulling in hot air from an attic or knee wall during the summer, your system may not be able to satisfy your desired cooling temperature. Likewise, if you are pulling cold air from an attic or crawl space during the winter, your system may not be able to satisfy your desired heating temperature. Airborne contaminants and odors pulled in through leaking return ductwork can cause health problems for anybody with known respiratory problems (asthma, allergies, etc.) as well as perfectly healthy people. Also, dirt pulled into the duct system can clog your indoor coil causing a loss in efficiency and sooner or later a repair call. While labor intensive, and seemingly costly, repairing or replacing your ductwork is
normally a sound investment.

Ductless
mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps are available that can be
used to cool one or more rooms without having to install ductwork.
They are super quiet and most of them operate by remote control.
There are many different models and the indoor portion can be
installed on a sheetrock ceiling, in a drop ceiling or on a wall.
Most brands and models range between 9,000 BTU's and 24,000 BTU's.
These units are great for old Charleston homes, additions, sunrooms
and FROG's.

Do you have rooms that are too hot or too cold? Do you constantly have to adjust the
thermostat when you move to different parts of the home or office? Zoning provides an affordable, energy efficient solution to your problem. Zoning divides the home or office into areas with similar heating and cooling requirements. Each zone has its own
thermostat. The result is total comfort, no matter where you are inside your home or office; heating or cooling only the rooms that are needed, and wasting less energy. Zoning can save up to 30% on your energy usage while providing much greater comfort. Zoning is ideal for homes or offices that have one system responsible for heating and cooling multiple levels, large glass areas, atriums, pools or hot tubs, wide open floor plans and
FROG's.

Adding an electronic air cleaner to your central heating and cooling system can make an enonnous difference in the indoor air quality of your home. It also helps keep it clean, too, while using less energy than a 40-watt light bulb.

UV Lights
UV light technology, which has been used in hospitals and labs for over 40 years, is now available to the general public. According to the American Lung Association a significant segment of the U.S. population suffers from allergies caused by bioaerosols (mold spores, bacteria, and viroses). Your heating and air conditioning ductwork, indoor coil and filters breed and circulate these bioareosols on a constant basis. When a UV Light is installed, it immediately starts destroying these bioaerosols on a 24 hour-a-day, 365 days-a-year basis. UV Lights have a cumulative effect on the microbes that by thru it. Those mold and bacteria that are not killed after the first pass do sustain some damage and will be eliminated after subsequent passes. The UV Light disrupts the microbes ability to reproduce. This is important as a single microbe can reproduce to hundreds of thousands or even millions in just 24 hours. UV Lights work off 11 OV and use no more power than a 60-watt light bulb.
